Met Surveys help map Flood Defences on the Banks of the Humber
Met Surveys Ltd, leaders in land, measured building and geophysical investigations help Ove Arup, to plan and monitor flood defences for the HUL1 train line along the banks of the Humber Estuary.

Met Surveys were commissioned to undertake a topographical survey to record the railway infrastructure, the nature and location of the existing bank as well as existing flood defences of the land adjacent to the Humber Estuary HUL1 train line, in order for a flood management plan to be produced.

Working in such an environment meant Health and Safety was a major issue for Met Surveys. The train line was to remain open whilst survey work was carried out, seeing trains travelling at around 90mph. A health and safety assessment was carried out resulting in a T12 part possession of the track being ordered, ensuring that the sleepers and rail could actually be surveyed in-between passing trains. Working in and alongside the Humber Estuary also posed issues, restrictive working practices had to be adhered to. Life jackets had to be worn on site at all times and tides had to be taken into consideration to ensure that coastal defences could be surveyed.

Neil Harvey, Chairman at Met Surveys Ltd comments: "Health and Safety aspects at the site proved to be interesting when carrying out the topographical survey. The information and data gathered on the HUL1 train line and Humber Estuary should enable Arup to develop a management strategy to mitigate future flood risks, which we are pleased we have contributed to.
