Tall Order for Met Surveys
Met Surveys is helping to alter the London skyline!

The Leeds-based company was commissioned to survey the area surrounding the proposed site of a new 41-storey skyscraper on Bishopsgate. Knowing the location of the existing sub-surface utility apparatus was critical to the design of the new infrastructure and so construction management specialists Mace Ltd brought in market-leaders Met Surveys to undertake the complex survey.

Met Surveys undertook a ground penetrating radar (GPR) and radio frequency locator (RFL) survey, over a three week period, to locate the existing sub-surface utility apparatus on approximately 0.7ha of highways and carriageways surrounding the site.

The site was located in the heart of the City of London and the nearby Liverpool Street Station meant that there was a heavy volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The majority of the work was therefore undertaken at night, utilising traffic management procedures, to minimise disruption to the traffic flow.

A sub-surface service tunnel was also surveyed using a confined spaces access survey team. The route of the tunnel, its profile and access points and the extent of the pipes and cables within it were all accurately surveyed and incorporated onto the digital site plan.

Neil Harvey, Director, Met Surveys said: We're proud to have contributed to what will be a major landmark in the City of London for years to come."

Heron Tower is to form the nucleus of Heron Plaza, the proposed development of a new world-class financial complex in the heart of London.
